Does Power Corrupt?

Does Power Corrupt?

  • Have you seen the “Stanford Prison Experiment”? The study shows how that everyday person, if given too much power, can become sadistic tyrants. So, this shows our human nature that when people rise to power, they become impulsive and rude, and the traits that initially allowed them to rise to power disappear. But, does the power corrupt everyone equally? Is it always wrong? Or can it be good too?

  • It looks like power only amplifies your true nature and shows your pre-existing ethical tendencies. So, for example, if someone is giving in spirit, they’ll become more philanthropic. In contrast, someone who already shows tendencies of sexual harassment might become more aggressive or objectify women even more.

  • On the contrary, you need power to make an influence - even to make the world a better place. So, it comes down to your inner strength and self-awareness. It depends on what you value and what wishes and wants you can keep within the limit.

  • Power doesn’t necessarily always corrupt people. It’s your choice - You can either be fair and give justice OR run after untold wealth and abuse your authority. But, power can be good, too - It does increase your confidence, optimism and betters your goal-achieving mindset. These are not bad characteristics in themselves. There are good doctors, teachers, business leaders, and politicians who realize that with power comes responsibilities.

But that’s just my take. Comment and share yours.
