How Do You Know You're on the Right Path?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. My friends are facing these huge life decisions - some just moved to a new country, others are deciding whether to have a baby, and one is stuck wondering if they should completely change careers.
And you know what? Making pros and cons lists just isn’t cutting it for them.
Sure, you can write down “better job opportunities” on one side and “missing family” on the other, but how do you weigh those against each other?
How do you compare the excitement of starting fresh in a new country with the pain of missing your mom’s cooking or not being there for your sister’s birthday?
And when it comes to having a baby - come on, how do you even make a pros and cons list for that? “Pro: creating new life. Con: no sleep for years.” Lol
It just feels ridiculous to reduce such a life-changing decision to bullet points.
The truth? Sometimes you just don’t know if you’re on the right path. And maybe that’s okay.
What I’m starting to realize is that there’s rarely a “right” or “wrong” choice. Life isn’t that simple.
Instead of trying to find the perfect answer, maybe we should ask ourselves:
- Does this feel true to who I am?
- When I imagine myself taking this path, even with all its challenges, does it feel meaningful?
- Am I making this choice based on what I truly want, or what I think others expect from me?
My friend who’s thinking about switching careers - she has a stable job that looks great on paper. But every time she talks about this new direction she wants to take, her eyes light up. That has to mean something, right?
Sometimes the hardest part isn’t making the decision - it’s living with the uncertainty that comes after. Will moving to a new country work out? Will I be a good parent? Will this career change pay off? We never really know.
“If you can see your path laid out in front of you step by step, you know it’s not your path. Your own path you make with every step you take.”
Joseph Campbell
Maybe that’s the point though. Maybe life isn’t about finding the perfectly right path, but about being brave enough to choose a path and make it right for you.
So no, I don’t think pros and cons lists have all the answers. They’re tools, sure, but they can’t capture the full story. Sometimes you have to listen to that quiet voice inside you, the one that knows things your logical mind can’t explain.
And here’s what I really think - there’s no single “right path.”
There are just different paths, each with their own challenges and gifts. The trick isn’t finding the perfect one - it’s choosing a direction that feels true to you and being brave enough to walk it, even when you’re not sure where it leads.
Because at the end of the day, isn’t that what makes life interesting? Not knowing exactly where we’re going, but choosing to move forward anyway?
